It’s ALWAYS a good thing to do so and it’s the way to avoid getting into money traps and scams.

Summary: Rodan and Fields is an MLM company selling skincare products through its distributors also known as their beauty consultants. They were bought by Estee Lauder back in 2002 but have since bought back by their founders in 2007.

The founders of the company are well-known in the industry. However, instead of promoting their products in retail stores, they take the approach of promoting them via words of mouth (MLM).

If you’re tired of finding ways to make money, here’s my #1 favorite way of making money online that’s sustainable and won’t need you to find recruits under you:

What Is Rodan and Fields?

Rodan and Fields is a company in beauty industry. Their founders, Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields used to come up with their own products before this brand, known as Proactiv.

If you have been passionate about the beauty industry, I’m sure you’ve heard and perhaps use Proactiv before. It is a brand that got a lot of good reviews and legit. To me, it does give a little bit of relief knowing that the products from Rodan and Fields are being created by people with credible backgrounds.

Good to mention that Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields are Stanford-trained dermatologists. They are backed by their qualifications and previous inventions.

I want to highlight this part because not all companies are being founded by people who’s actually a professional in the industry. Like other MLM companies.

The company has since expanded to various parts of the world – Canada, Australia, and Japan. Yes, they have managed to enter the Asian market.

They do have a lot of product range from anti aging to dry sensitive skin, as well as dermacosmetics (makeup). Some of their best sellers are the R+F Lash Boost, REDEFINE Regimen and Active Hydration Bright Eye Complex.

Now, you can see from the picture above that these products are NOT cheap.

It’s actually really expensive. Even though I’ve seen many good reviews of the products (many of them are actually being done by the consultants, so be aware), you need to think of a way on how are you going to convince people to buy such expensive products.

PC Perks Program

They do have a PC Perks program that can give you a bit of discount on the product, though still expensive to me.

You have to pay a one-time fee of $19.95 to become a Preferred Customer (PC) and get 10% off every order and free shipping or orders of more than $80 after applying the 10% discount.

I would actually try one of their products first before committing to the PC Perks program. I think the program is much more suited for someone who will always want to replenish their stocks at home and has been a loyal customer of Rodan and Fields.

Be careful when you enter into the PC Perks program though, as there were numerous complaints made with the cancellation process. See below:

Is Rodan and Fields A Legit Company?

Rodan and Fields is a legit company, selling skincare products.

Again, the founders are well-known in the industry and the products have received more good reviews than bad ones.

However, if you are doing research on the product review, please also be mindful that the reviews can be done by the consultants to attract sales.

Some people have gotten good results, while others don’t – just like any other skincare brands out there.

Check out reviews that WON’T link you to another website for you to purchase or a Facebook group for you to join.

Even though the company is legit with legit products, you have to know and research more before committing yourself into becoming their distributors or consultants.

As the primary method of promoting Rodan and Fields products is by words of mouth and in an MLM structure, you have to ask whether or not Rodan and Fields is a pyramid scheme.

That brings us to the next section.

Is Rodan and Fields A Pyramid Scheme?

First thing first, we have to know how to differentiate between a “normal” MLM company with a pyramid scheme. You can check out the video below

If you haven’t watched it, please do so. Because you can then see that the line to distinguish an MLM company to a pyramid scheme is really, really thin.

However, because the primary source of Rodan and Fields’s income is actually by the sales of their products and not by recruiting people or promising their consultants of big paycheck every month, they are NOT a pyramid scheme.

As I’m doing this review and researching this company, I honestly wouldn’t mind trying out ONE product from them.

One because of the price and see whether it makes any difference to my skin. If I like the product, then I could potentially buy more from them.

That being said, I WOULDN’T join them as a consultant because:

  • It won’t be easy to sell with the high price
  • Not only buying the product is expensive but in order to become a consultant, I have to pay $75 to enroll plus $24.95 + tax for monthly access to training and other online tools
  • I don’t like to recruit people and this is THE way for you to be able to make more “passive” commissions. with this business

How To Make Money With Rodan and Fields?

There are multiple ways you can earn with Rodan and Fields as a consultant.

Please note that MLM companies ALWAYS change their compensation plan and this is only applicable to USA. As of writing, these are the ways you can earn with the rate. They may change the rates later on whenever the company deems fit.

So, there are 5 ways you can earn BASED on your level:

  1. Normal Consultant
  2. Retail Profit: Pretty straight forward. Whenever someone buys the products from you, you will get a cut from the sales.
  3. Active Consultant
    • Retail Profit
    • Consultant Commission: 10% cut from Level 1 consultants under you.
  4. Executive Consultant
    • Retail Profit
    • Consultant Commission: 10% cut from Level 1 consultants under you.
    • Personal Team Commissions: 5% cut for Level 1 & 2 consultants under you.
  5. Generation Commissions
    • Retail Profit
    • Consultant Commission: 10% cut from Level 1 consultants under you.
    • Personal Team Commissions: 5% cut for Level 1 & 2 consultants under you.
    • Generation Commissions: 5% cut on generation (formed when create executive teams) This is more complicated to explain but in essence you will need to create multiple thriving teams under you.
  6. Performance bonuses

Here’s the compensation plan at a glance they have provided:

is rodan and fields a pyramid scheme 8 - Is Rodan and Fields A Pyramid Scheme? 3 Things You Need To Know

BUT, do know that even though you have enrolled and paid to be their consultants, that doesn’t mean you will get commissions straight away.

In order to be eligible for commissions, you will need to have these achievements below:

  • Monthly sales to retail customers / personal purchase of $100 worth of products
  • For higher commissions & maintain your status: 600 Volume of products purchased each month by your direct customers / direct consultants.

Can You Actually Make Money With Rodan and Fields?

Note: MLM companies DON’T pay salaries to consultants/distributors.

Now that we’ve gone through multiple ways for you to make money with R+F, now it’s time to talk about just how much you can earn with them.

As you know with MLM companies, it’s always the mantra that the more you engage and connect with people and sharing the products, the more likely you will be able to succeed.

But just how many of those have actually succeeded? Let’s take a look at their income disclosure below:

is rodan and fields a pyramid scheme 9 - Is Rodan and Fields A Pyramid Scheme? 3 Things You Need To Know

The bigger chunk of the consultants makes on average $25… while spending $75 upfront, $25 monthly fees for training, products they probably need to buy to maintain their status, miscellaneous expenses like gas, AND the most important expense, time.

Only 3.3% of the consultants actually make more than $1,000/month.

Is that worth your time? You will need to ask yourself that.

One thing I would like to see is that the average number of months they took to be able to make more than $1,000/month.

If like other MLM companies out there, where it will take on average a year to make $1,000/month, I can think of another way to make money that’s more sustainable and won’t need you to always sell the products to be eligible for commissions.

Who Is Rodan and Fields For?

I can tell you that MLM is not for everyone. It’s definitely not for me.

How do I know that? Because I had been doing MLM for a year when I was in college – and it was a waste of my time, energy, and money.

Even though at that time I was very energetic and have a lot of connections for me to introduce the product to, I soon realized that I don’t like to be pushy and promote something that I don’t really know their efficacy.

Subpar products. Many MLM companies have very subpar products.

For Rodan and Fields, I do see a mixed of good and bad reviews of their products but because of the price, I do think my drugstore skincare is enough and I don’t see the purpose of buying something new and expensive.

BUT if you LOVE this product, energetic and don’t mind approaching people to join you, this might be for you.

If you’re an introvert, forget about doing this all together. I know how it feels and I can probably give you a list of other things to do to make you more comfortable talking to strangers.

If you just want to check out the program and do this on the side, I’m afraid I have to tell you this – when it comes to MLM, especially when you need to keep on producing sales to be eligible for commissions, you need to go all in.

There’s just no middle ground.

This actually also applies to many part of your life. Marriage, career – you have to go all in.

What I Like About Rodan and Fields?

Now I do like some parts of Rodan and Fields.

1. Legit Products

I’m not saying that their products are the best out there, but I have previously tried Proactiv and it was good.

As I mentioned, I do see mixed reviews on their products whereby people have actually tried them out and see results (good and bad). It’s hard to find all good reviews when it comes to skincare brand because everyone has different skin types.

But they do have products that people can use – and not trash, like many MLM companies produce.

Here’s an example of their product review:

2. 60 Days Money Back Guarantee

Now, I don’t see a lot of these when it comes to skincare brands. Many don’t actually do this kind of promotion for people to try out their products.

I guess since the products are not exactly the most affordable, it will give a sense of relief to know that you can refund if the products are not working out for you.

That being said, you do need to pay for return shipping, either with them or by your own. And they don’t refund any shipping cost.

is rodan and fields a pyramid scheme 11 - Is Rodan and Fields A Pyramid Scheme? 3 Things You Need To Know

Also, be aware there are some complaints whereby it’s very hard to get the refund from them.

is rodan and fields a pyramid scheme 12 - Is Rodan and Fields A Pyramid Scheme? 3 Things You Need To Know

3. Founders Are Legit

I like the fact that the founders, Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields are well-known in the industry and have proven track records. It does give me a sense of relief knowing that they are professionals who have come up with their own powerful skincare products before.

It also made me feel better knowing that Estee Lauder had once acquired them. I take that Estee Lauder had seen some potential with the company before.

What I DON’T Like About Rodan and Fields

1. Expensive Products & Startup Costs

I also use some more expensive skincare products BUT their prices are just too expensive to wrap my head around it. Even their best seller Lash Boost is priced at $150 is pretty ridiculous. And this is my opinion as a consumer.

And I’m one of the people that you will need to actually convince to buy these products. When the price is too high, the market penetration is very hard, therefore it’s gonna be hard for you as well to get sales as a consultant.

Not only that, the startup cost for you to join as a consultant is also pretty high at $75.

Even though it’s a one-time fee, it IS still your money, and to get those starter packs, I don’t think it would need to be priced that high.

If you want to advance and get your own website, you will then need to enroll in their PULSE Pro plan and pay another $25 monthly for extra training and tools.

I can tell you that there’s another way to get started, create your own website, promote the products that you LOVE for free. You only pay for more when you’re ready, not when you’re just getting started.

2. Many People Don’t Actually Make Money

The income disclosure says it all – only 3.3% of consultants actually make more than $1,000/month. Now you gotta ask yourself whether $1,000/month is even enough?

Take into account that on average you will be paying for the training monthly access, gas, and probably lunches where you take your prospects out. As well as your time.

When it comes to MLM, it’s easier for you to make money when you’re one of the early birds since the potential for you to recruit more people and introduce the product is higher. If you don’t believe this, you can watch the video on pyramid scheme again.

It’s the same recruiting structure even though this company is an MLM company.

3. Recruiting People

I just don’t like recruiting people. There, I said it.

If you like to do so, by all means, you can go and try joining Rodan and Fields as a consultant.

To me, I prefer to create a business where people will come to my site and read the products that I promote. It’s not impossible to do that. Many have done that and you can do the same too.

I prefer to create a website for free when I first starting out, review the products that I have personally used and LOVE, and get users to come and buy those products from me. If you want to learn how to do it this way, you can get my free training here.

That’s my ultimate guide on how to sustainably create a business online where you don’t need to keep on recruiting people. And it’s free to get started.

It’s free training, free to get started and no credit card details required.

Should You Go With Rodan and Fields?

Again, if you’re happy with the products and don’t mind going with the MLM route, you can definitely join them.

There are some people that are made for MLM and there are that aren’t.

We are not all made the same. If you think you do want to try it out, you have the money to fork out, and you’re confident you can do it with guidance from a good leader, you can go for it.

But if you’re like me, you can see the cons actually outweigh the pros.

Therefore, I personally wouldn’t go for it, nor any MLM companies.

A Better Way To Make Money

If you want to promote the product that you LOVE and get users to come to you instead, you will want to learn how to do so with affiliate marketing.

This is what I’m doing to earn money online and it’s sustainable.

I DON’T need to recruit people.

I get to do it as a side hustle today and still make money years later, WITHOUT having to become eligible every month just to get commissions.
